The watch needed to be accurate, reliable, and have a robust case capable of enduring the extreme conditions of space. Omega was chosen over Rolex, whose watch was not considered accurate enough, and it has been the standard timepiece for every American manned space flight since 1965, including the lunar landings of 1969.
